What Are High Index Lenses?

The refractive index is a measure of a lens's ability to bend light and is often used to describe the thickness of lenses. Lenses with different refractive indices have distinct characteristics, mainly in terms of thickness, weight, Abbe number (a measure of material's dispersion or light-spreading properties), and price. Here are the features of lenses with refractive indices of 1.50, 1.56, 1.60, 1.67, and 1.74。

1.50 Refractive Index Lenses:

Advantages: High Abbe number (around 58.8), providing clearer vision and better color reproduction.

Disadvantages: Thicker compared to other refractive index lenses, suitable for people with low prescriptions (typically recommended for under 200 degrees).

Suitable for: People with low prescriptions who have high demands for color and visual quality.

1.56 Refractive Index Lenses:

Characteristics: As a middle option between 1.50 and 1.60, they offer thinner lenses than 1.50 while maintaining a relatively high Abbe number (33-36).

Suitable for: People with prescriptions under 400 degrees who are looking for a cost-effective option.

1.60 Refractive Index Lenses:

Advantages: Provide a good balance between thinness and a high Abbe number (around 40), suitable for people with higher prescriptions.

Disadvantages: More expensive than 1.50 and 1.56 lenses.

Suitable for: People with prescriptions between 400 and 700 degrees who need thinner lenses and have certain visual quality expectations.

1.67 Refractive Index Lenses:

Advantages: Thinner than 1.60 lenses, offering good visual effects and lighter weight.

Disadvantages: Expensive, and the dispersion effect may be more noticeable than with lower refractive index lenses.

Suitable for: People with prescriptions over 700 degrees who require thinner and lighter lenses.

1.74 Refractive Index Lenses:

Advantages: Very thin, lightweight, ideal for people with high prescriptions.

Disadvantages: High cost, and the dispersion effect may be quite apparent.

Suitable for: People with prescriptions over 1000 degrees who have high demands for lens thinness and weight.
